Pig raiser in Khammouane face currency exchange kip into baht

(KPL) The group of pig raisers in central province of Khammouane faces difficulties in currency exchange from local currency Kip into Thai “Baht”, attributed to the fact that piglets and animal feed have to be imported from Thailand.
They also face additional problems with loaning from bank, the fluctuation of imported animal feed and the cost of pork has been knocked out by brokers in the market.
This problem has affected the booming pig farming in four districts of the province. The Provincial Divisions of Industry and Commerce, Agriculture and Forest, and Planning and Investment will closely monitor this situation.
To address this circumstance, Khammouane pig raiser group gathered on 12 September at the meeting room of the Provincial Industry and Commerce Service to review the operation of the 2007-08 annual plan.
The meeting was attended by Khammouane Deputy Governor, Mr Somchay Phetsinouan and other officials concerned.
Mr Somsy Souksomboun, Chairman of the pig raiser group highlighted the background of the pig raiser group which was established in 2007.
More than 370 pig farms have been established since 2006 in Khammouane province. This figure sees a rapid growth, he said.
This number has doubled. Presently, 176 farms are members of the pig raiser group.
Last year, 44,000 adult pigs weighing hundreds of tonnes of pork were supplied to local market including Vientiane Capital.
Farmers in Khammouane province was financed about 45.5 billion kip, of which 37.6 billion kip go to cow raisers, rice farmers and pig raisers, by the Government through all banks. In the next year’s plan, the number of pig farms will be sustained and will increase the number of pigs to 115,040.
The annual plan aims to promote domestic production in an effort to substitute the import of piglets and animal feed by 80% to 60%.
