RUSNANO to invest 750M roubles in quartz materials production

    MOSCOW, August 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's corporation of
nanotechnologies /RUSNANO/ will invest 750 million roubles in production
of quartz materials to be used in the economy's innovative sectors.
RUSNANO and the Kyshtym ore-dressing and processing enterprise signed
an investment agreement on expanding and technical renovation of the
production of high-purity quartz concentrates, a source at the corporation
said. The projected investments are 2.2 billion roubles.
Concentrates produced under the project are used as a basic
construction material for high-purity glass, which is used in micro
electronics, power and ultraviolet equipment, special optics, quartz
ceramics and in other high-technology spheres.
The enterprise will be renovated for three years in two stages. The
enterprise will increase its output by over six times. At the first stage,
by mid-2012, it will produce up to 6,000 tonnes of quartz material a year.
The present international market of quartz concentrates is about 60,000
tonnes a year. Thus, with RUSNANO's investments, the enterprise will be
able to rank second in the global market, which experiences a deficit of
quartz concentrates because of rapid growth of solar energy /about 25
percent a year/.
Russia's own sufficient production of quartz concentrates will form a
full vertically integrated production chain for polysilicon in the country.
"One of the factors of nanotechnologies' development is production of
basic materials," RUSNANO's Managing Director Evgeny Evdokimov said. "High
quality quartz concentrates and nano-powder are among them. Their
production will lower the final price in the domestic market, will remove
the dependence on export supplies and will favour flow of investments into
Russia's technology sectors."
"The market of quartz concentrates is a locomotive for the domestic
market, it will make preconditions for development of neighbouring sectors
and will stimulate the scientific and research activity in use of
high-purity quartz, including micro- and nano-sized powders, and will give
an impetus to rebirth of technology and engineering school in the quartz sector," Director General of the Kyshtym ore-dressing and processing
enterprise Vadim Kuzmin said.
