MANUFACTURING SALES VALUE RECORDS DOUBLE DIGIT GROWTH IN JULY

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 (Bernama) -- The manufacturing sector continued to record a year-on-year double digit growth in sales value of 15 percent to RM52.5 billion (US$15.4 billion) in July.

The sales value increased 1.2 percent or RM600 million (US$177
million)month-on-month against the RM51.9 billion (US$15.3 billion) in June, the
Statistics Department said in its monthly manufacturing statistics
report.

It said the year-on-year increase was generated by the growth in the sales
value of 76 industries out of 106 covered by the survey.

The five major industries whose sales value increased significantly were
involved in the manufacture of refined petroleum products, the manufacture of
basic iron and steel products, the manufacture of television and radio
receivers, sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus and associated
goods, the manufacture of other basic industrials chemicals except fertilisers
and nitrogen compounds as well as the manufacture of plastics in primary forms
and of synthetic rubber.

The department said, during the month, total employees engaged in the
sector was 1,083,733 - a decrease of 1.6 percent compared to a year ago.

About RM2.112 billion (US$610 million) was paid out as salaries and wages
in July, it added.

From January to July 2008, the sales value of the sector recorded a
double-digit growth of 15.8 percent or RM46.4 billion (US$13.4 billion) to
RM340.2 billion (US$98.3 billion).

The department said a total of 64 industries out of 106 covered in the
survey posted a sales value of RM700 million (US$202.1 million) and above for
the period January to July 2008.

These industries registered a cumulative sales value of RM326.5 billion
(US$94.3 billion), which was 16.1 percent or RM45.3 billion (US$13.1 billion)
higher than the RM281.1 billion (US$81.2 billion) reported during the
comparative period of 2007.

The department said during the period, the number of employees engaged
decreased by 1.6 percent to 1,083,733 people.

Cumulatively, it said productivity or average sales value per employee in
the period increased 17.7 percent to RM313,930.11 (US$90.6 billion).
