STRAITS OF MELAKA IS FREE FROM SERIOUS CRIMES, SAYS MARINE POLICE COMMANDER
KANGAR (Malaysia), Sept 18 (Bernama) -- The Straits of Melaka is free from major threats, but the marine police will always be on the alert for any
eventualities, said Marine Police Commander SAC 11 Isa Munir.
He said there had been no reports of serious crime, like robbery in the
area for the past one year which indicated that the seaway, among the world's
busiest shipping route, is safe.
Speaking to reporters at a breaking of fast on a marine police boat at
Selat Peluru, in northern Langkawi Wednesday night, Isa said that besides
ensuring the Straits Melaka remained safe, patrols were also conducted to check
on the movement of illegal immigrants.
He said with the approaching of Aidilfitri (Eid al-fitr to commemorate the
end of fasting month), many illegal immigrants would find a way to leave the
country to return to their countries of origin undetected.
On the Ops Octopus, which was launched on Sept 7, Isa said a total of 281
illegal immigrants were detained and various items, including diesel, cooking
oil, cigarettes, firecrackers and fireworks, worth RM313,465 (US$92,075), were
seized in the operation which ended Wednesday night.
