Smuggling cases surge 36 pct at Incheon airport
SEOUL (Yonhap) - Smuggling cases detected at Incheon International Airport, the main gateway to South Korea, surged in the first half of this year, data released by the Korea Customs Service (KCS) showed Sunday.
According to the data, a total of 361 violations of the customs law were reported in the January-June period at Incheon airport, up 36 percent from 266 a year ago. The customs law is applied primarily to smuggling cases, including false customs declarations and customs evasion.
The number of smuggling cases at Incheon has been on an upward curve after falling from 412 cases in the first half of 2008 to 178 in the first half of 2009, KCS and airport officials said, noting illegal imports of luxury goods have shown particular growth in recent years.
