Most S. Koreans hope to die before age 90: poll
SEOUL (Yonhap) - More than half of all South Koreans do not wish to live to be older than 90, as many fear the illnesses and medical expenses associated with old age, a survey showed Sunday.
The survey was conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs on 1,000 males and females aged between 30 to 69 years.
Out of all respondents, 59.3 percent said they only wished to live to their 80s, with 20.9 percent saying only until their 70s. Only 8.2 percent answered they wished to live more than 100 years, while 7.8 percent said they wanted to live to their 90s.
The life expectancy of a newborn in South Korea is already more than 80 years and is rising annually, apparently due to advances in medical services and living conditions.
However, 43.3 percent of those surveyed said living to be more than 90 years old was not a blessing, with more than 30 percent citing aged-related diseases, poverty and social isolation as reasons for their views on long life.
