Senior Iranian MP Calls London Insecure for Olympic Games

TEHRAN (FNA)- Member of the Iranian parliament's Sports Commission Hossein Garrousi expressed concern bout holding Olympic games in London after the recent unrests in the city which have endangered the security of the British capital.
"The issue of London hosting the 2012 Olympics should be subjected to further and closer examination due to the fierce clashes… in the country," Garrousi said on Saturday.

"The popular protests in various cities of England are deep-rooted and have broken out after years, and they are… related to the performance of the country's political authorities," he noted.

The UK riots broke out on August 6, when a few hundred people gathered outside a police station in the north London suburb of Tottenham to protest against the fatal shooting of a Black man, Mark Duggan, on August 4.

The turmoil then spread to other major cities in the UK, such as Birmingham, Liverpool, and Bristol. Several people have also reportedly been killed during the government crackdown on the demonstrations.

Garrousi added that there are some Asian countries that are able to host the Olympic Games.

China has also echoed the concerns over London's ability to host the games.

"The three consecutive days of rioting has spread to the east London area where the main sports stadium of the London Olympics is located," a recent report by China's official Xinhua news agency stated.

The tension has triggered skepticism and concern "about the public security situation during the London Olympics," the report added.
