Somali Pirates Release Iranian, Indian Sailors
TEHRAN (FNA)- 21 sailors, including 12 Iranians and 9 Indians were freed by Somali pirates six month after their ship was hijacked on its way from Fujairah port to Singapore.
The Malta flagged MV Sinin had been hijacked on February 12, 2011, with 23 sailors on board, by Somali pirates 315 nautical miles off Masirah (Oman).
The ship, which is owned by an Iranian company called Iranohind Shipping Co Ltd., is expected to reach Colombo by August 19.
"Nine Indian sailors along with 12 Iranians of Sinin have been released by the pirates Saturday. All of them are safe," Mumbai's Director-General of Shipping S B Agnihotri announced in a statement.
Details like if ransom was paid to secure the release of the sailors and the ship were not immediately known.
The ship owner has provided necessary provisions and fuel so that the freighter can sail to Colombo, the statement said.
The number of pirate attacks has increased in 2011 with 176 attacks on vessels by suspected Somali pirates, resulting in 22 successful hijackings with 378 crew taken hostage so far.
