Austrian photographer explores mysteries of different people

TEHRAN, Aug. 14 (MNA) -- Portraits of people from diverse nations taken by the Austrian photographer Kurt Hörbst, on display at Tehran’s Shirin Gallery, seem to reveal mysteries of different peoples in the world.

Hörbst, who traveled to Iran to hold a photo exhibition in Tehran, told the Persian service of ISNA that he has journeyed to different countries to take photos of nation in their natural surrounding.

Photos he has taken in Ecuador, Bangladesh and Austria are currently on display during a showcase at Tehran’s Shirin Gallery.

He said that while he has traveled extensively, the destinations themselves are not that important to him. He explained that human beings are the most important subjects for his photography, saying that he enjoys connecting with people from different countries.

Hörbst added that he prefers to depict interesting subjects for his photography, which he refers to as a window to the world for him.

He said that he is surprised by the number of people attending his exhibition in Tehran and acclaimed the professional character of their questions.

He mentioned that he gathered information during his trip to Iran and he will travel to the country again in January 2012.

He explained about his recent project and the technical details of the images during a meeting at Tehran’s Book City.

He said that he went to rural areas and took photos of villagers since he thought that this could be their once-in-a-lifetime chance to be photographed and then printed the photos for them.

Afterward, a film about the relation between Hörbst and his subjects was screened for the audience.

In his exhibition currently underway at Shirin Gallery, he depicted the paradox between European civilization and modernism in the East.

He said that he plans to display portraits of Iranians during an exhibit in the country after his trip to India and Venice.

Kurt Hörbst originally studied telecommunications however he began to study the field of photography in Prague in 1992.

Kurt founded a school of photography in Austria in 1996 and now teaches history of photojournalism at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences.

His works have appeared in numerous exhibitions both at home and abroad.
