S. Korea's industrial power sales grow in July
SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's industrial electricity sales grew steadily last month on growing exports by the chemical, machinery and steel sectors, the government said Monday.
Demand for industrial electricity rose 8.7 percent on-year to 21.6 billion kilowatt-hours, though the growth rate slowed from a 9.1 percent spike tallied in June, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
Industrial power sales serve as a barometer of industrial activity, as companies use more electricity when business is good and cut back to cope with falls in orders.
"Industrial electricity sales were pulled up by exports that rose 27.3 percent on-year last month," the ministry said in a press release.
Demand from the chemical and machinery industries rose 16.7 percent and 16.3 percent on-year, respectively, with demand from the steel industry, whose exports jumped 72.5 percent in July, also rising 14.2 percent.
Overall sales of electricity, including household electricity, rose 4.9 percent on-year to 37.3 billion kilowatt-hours.
"Sales of household electricity rose only by a similar margin as that of industrial power use (against expectations) as lower-than-expected temperatures led to less demand for cooling," the ministry said.
