Passengers using int'l flights hits record high in July
SEOUL (Yonhap) - The number of passengers using international flights hit a record high last month as summer holidays and vacations encouraged more people to travel overseas, the transportation ministry said Monday.
According to the ministry, the number of international flight passengers came to 3.94 million last month, up 10.6 percent from a year earlier when the figure stood at 3.57 million.
The hike was attributed to more travel overseas by people here as the summer vacation and holiday season started in full swing.
Travelers bound for Southeast Asian countries jumped 27.1 percent on-year last month, while those leaving for Europe rose 15.2 percent, the ministry said.
Though people still remained reluctant to visit Japan following the March 11 deadly earthquake, the decline appeared to be tempering. Travelers bound for Japan declined 6.6 percent last month from a year earlier, compared with a 30.3 percent shrinkage in April.
Travelers using domestic flights also increased. Domestic flight passengers came to 1.73 million last month, up 3.3 percent from a year earlier.
Budget carriers drove the passenger increase. Jeju Air Co. and T'way Airlines saw the number of passengers using their domestic lines jump 68.3 percent and 11 percent, respectively, from a year earlier, the ministry said.
