China's aircraft carrier to create economic impact: experts
HONG KONG, Aug. 15 (Yonhap) -- China's first aircraft carrier is likely to create an economic impact on the Chinese industries, boosting research and development for related technologies and equipment, experts said Monday.
China test-ran its refitted former Soviet carrier Varyag on its first sea trial on Wednesday, a move that added to outside concerns over Beijing's military expansion.
China Investment Corporation (CIC), a sovereign wealth fund responsible for managing part of China's foreign exchange reserves, estimated that the market value of Varyag in its lifetime will reach 300 billion yuan (US$47 billion) to 400 billion yuan.
Gao Bo-xuan, a senior CIC researcher, said the figure is almost equivalent to the total investment China made in the recently completed Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway.
Other analysts said that China's more aggressive move toward building its aircraft carriers will have to involve most advanced materials and equipment as well as information systems.
Li Jianjian, a senior analyst at China's Founder Securities, said that China will have to spend at least 30 billion yuan in the next five years to establish a manufacturing chain for aircraft carriers.
Li estimated that it will cost China additional $6 billion to develop a warship battle group to support an aircraft carrier.
He also expected that China will build another aircraft carrier fully using its own technology.
The two aircraft carriers will likely cost China a total of US$18 billion he said.
Wang Shan, deputy director of the Marine Strategic Research Center at the Chinese Institute of Contemporary International Relations, said China has the economic capability to own and support five heavy-weight aircraft carriers.
Liu Zhuping, a Chinese expert on ship-building business, said investment related to aircraft carriers will benefit five industries of high-end equipment manufacturing, aviation weapons, power systems, high-end materials and information systems.
