Iran to Dispatch More Humanitarian Aids to Somalia

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's Red Crescent Society plans to send more humanitarian aid cargos to the Somali people as the North African country is fighting drought and famine.
Head of the Society's Relief and Rescue Organization Mahmoud Mozaffar announced on Sunday that Iran's third humanitarian aid cargo weighs 40 tons.
He also announced that another cargo of humanitarian assistance weighing 100 tons will be shipped to the famine-hit African country soon.
Mozaffar added that the two aid cargos that Iran already dispatched to Somalia went to the aid of 100,000 Somalis who are struggling with death.
He also said that Iran was among the first countries to come to the aid of Somalia, which is grappling with famine.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Mozaffar announced that a cargo of humanitarian assistance weighing 40 tons will be soon sent to Libya, which has been dragged into a civil war.
Iran has repeatedly announced its support for the people of Somalia stressing that it would spare no effort in helping Somalis survive the tragic situation.
More than 1.5 million Somalis have been internally displaced by a tug of war among the armed factions in the African country, which has been without an effective central government since the overthrow of the country's former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.
The UN has declared famine in five areas in southern Somalia, warning that, without urgent intervention, the food crisis could engulf the entire southern areas.
