New car model imports surge to 4-year high in H1
SEOUL, Aug. 16 (Yonhap) -- Imports of new car models sold in South Korea reached a four-year high in the first half of this year mainly due to a surge in consumer demand, a report showed Tuesday.
The Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA) report said 36 new model cars were launched in the country in the January-June period, up from 33 a year earlier.
The tally is the highest since a record 59 cars were introduced in the first half of 2007.
"With the local market for imported cars expected to reach over 100,000 units this year, South Korea has become an important market for foreign carmakers," a KAIDA executive said.
He pointed out that in the January-June period, sales of imported cars jumped 23.2 percent to over 50,000 units, with their combined market share reaching 7.85 percent.
The association also said as foreign carmakers move to import more models to meet growing demand, the total number of new vehicles sold in the country throughout the year should surpass the record of 80 set in 2006.
