S. Korea's fisheries output inches down in H1: report

SEOUL, Aug. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's fisheries output edged down during the first half from a year earlier due mainly to sluggish deep-sea fishing output, a government report showed Tuesday.
Fisheries production amounted to 1.626 million tons during the January-June period, down 0.3 percent from 1.630 million tons caught in the same period a year earlier, according to the report by Statistics Korea.
The decline was attributed to sluggish fishing in deep water, which offset the increases in coastal fishing and fish farm production.
Deep-sea fishing output fell 5.5 percent during the first half from a year earlier to 273,000 tons, the report showed.
Despite the decrease in total catch, a hike in fish prices helped push up the total value of output to 3.50 trillion won (US$3.25 billion), a 5 percent rise from the previous year's 3.33 trillion won, according to the report.
