ADB gives US23 million to water supply project

(KPL) The Asian Development Bank has given US$ 23 million for water supply and sanitation projects for small districts in central and northern provinces.
The infrastructural projects would result in the expansion of the water supply system to people in 21 target districts of 13 provinces and thereby ensuring that 80 per cent of the people would enjoy such a decent facility by 2020.
Planning for this project was carried out by the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and it was part of its master plan to provide modern water supply system for the whole country. This was in accordance to the policy and guideline of the Party and Government on poverty eradication and to get Laos out of the list of least developed countries.
A memorandum of understanding on the aid was signed on 16 September between the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and the Asian Development Bank.
The Head of the Project, Mr Phomma Veolavanh, said that the water supply system would be available round the clock and the water would have a transparent colour.
The Lao government contributed US$1.9 million and local people gave US$0.1 million and the total amount is US$25 million.
