Iran Urges End to Violence in Libya
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran on Tuesday deplored continued military conflicts and foreign interference in Libya, and called for rapid end to the violence in the North African state.
"Iran has a clear stance on Libya. Violence and military conflicts should be stopped in the country because military clashes only resulted in the killing of innocent people," Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast told reporters here in Tehran today.
He denounced the interference of Western powers and NATO in the affairs of countries, particularly Libya and added that "any interference of foreign powers and NATO member countries in the affairs of Libya is incorrect because it has merely led to destruction and the killing of innocent people in the country".
The spokesperson stressed the importance of establishing stability and security in Libya and preparing the ground for the Libyan people to run the country's affairs by putting an end to the conflicts.
He called on countries which can play a role in restoring stability and security in Libya to exchange views and bolster cooperation with the purpose of creating an "optimal" situation in the North African country.
Muammar Gaddafi's forces have been battling the revolutionaries who are seeking to end the Libyan leader's more than 40-year rule.
In February, the UN Security Council passed a resolution allowing military action to protect civilians and sanctions against Gaddafi.
But Libyan officials say that NATO warplanes bombed civilian areas causing damage and casualties. However, the Western military alliance said it struck a military command centers.
Meantime, Gaddafi continues clinging on power despite the NATO-led aerial attacks and a lengthening conflict with revolutionaries who now control roughly half of the North African country.
