S. Korea's white-collar workers top 4 mln in July
SEOUL, Aug. 17 (Yonhap) -- The number of white-collar workers in South Korea exceeded 4 million for the first time in July as the nation's industrialized economic structure created more office jobs, data showed Wednesday.
According to the data by Statistics Korea, white-collar workers here totaled 4.02 million last month, up 7.1 percent from 3.76 million tallied a year earlier. This marked the first time that the figure has exceeded 4 million since related data started to be compiled.
White-collar workers refer to salaried people employed to do semi-professional, administrative and other office jobs, as opposed to blue-collar workers who usually perform manual tasks.
The ratio of white-collar jobs to the total workforce also rose to 16.3 percent last month from 15.5 percent a year ago. The total number of working people reached 24.63 million last month, with 335,000 more jobs being added to payrolls.
"White-collar workers increased along with the overall growth in the number of employed," a Statistics Korea official said. "It seems that the number of such office workers is growing at a faster pace than other working groups as the economic structure is being industrialized."
The number of white-collar workers stood at 3.33 million in July 2004 and has risen steadily ever since. In 2008, the figure rose to 3.4 million and surpassed 3.9 million last November, according to the data.
