Seoul shares open lower on U.S. losses
SEOUL, Aug. 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks opened lower on Wednesday, tracking overnight losses on Wall Street, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 2.73 points, or 0.15 percent, to 1,877.14 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Large-cap shares widely lost ground, with market bellwether Samsung Electronics losing 0.13 percent and its smaller rival LG Electronics falling 2.15 percent.
U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday after three days of gains as the meeting between the heads of France and Germany failed to come up with effective solutions for the continuing fiscal problem. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.67 percent and the Nasdaq composite index tumbled 1.24 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,073.25 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m., down 3.25 won from Tuesday's close.
