Samsung's Lee to attend opening ceremony of Daegu athletics meet
SEOUL, Aug. 17 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. Chairman Lee Kun-hee is expected to attend the opening ceremony of the World Championships in Athletics slated for Aug. 27, company officials said Wednesday.
Lee will attend the ceremony, scheduled to take place in Daegu, about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), they said
Samsung said that Lee wants to be in Daegu so he can express his appreciation for other IOC members' support for South Korea's successful bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.
Early last month, the alpine city of PyeongChang won its bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, succeeding in its third attempt to bring the Winter Games to South Korea for the first time.
Samsung, the country's largest family-owned conglomerate, said Lee will not engage in any other business activities while he is in Daegu.
The athletics meet is a showcase event for the International Association of Athletic Federations. The championship, which will run through Sept. 4, marks the first time that South Korea has hosted the event which will be attended by nearly 2,500 athletes from at least 207 countries.
