Iranian FM Welcomes Russian Proposal as Step Forward

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday welcomed the Russian 'step by step' proposal for the Iran-West nuclear standoff, and described it as a step forward.
"We believe your proposal is a forward move and consider it as a good behavior shown by our brothers in Moscow," Salehi told Lavrov during the meeting in Moscow.

Lavrov, for his part, described the Islamic Republic of Iran as the big neighbor of Russia, and said, "We are ready to expand bilateral and international relations with Iran and bolster cooperation on Iran's nuclear program."

Earlier, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili had also reiterated that Tehran welcomes the proposals made by the Russian government on nuclear talks and cooperation.

Jalili made the remarks after the second round of talks with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev on Tuesday.

"We welcome the proposals made by our Russian friends on talks and cooperation. We are ready to even offer help, so these proposals would bear fruit and they're the groundwork for cooperation with regard to regional and international issues," Jalili told reporters.

On July 13, the Russian foreign minister proposed a new 'step-by-step' approach toward Iran's nuclear program that would enable the Islamic Republic to take steps to address questions raised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to the proposed plan, Iran can revive negotiations to alleviate individual concerns of the IAEA about its nuclear activities and be rewarded along the way by the partial removal of sanctions.

The approach would start out with the easiest questions and move on to more complicated ones that would require a longer time for a response.

Iran has repeatedly stressed that according to the modality plan agreed by the Islamic Republic and the IAEA in 2007, the agency should close Iran's nuclear dossier since Tehran has addressed and resolved all issues of contention.
