Seoul shares open lower on U.S. losses

SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks opened lower on Thursday as investor sentiment was dented by concerns over weak economic growth.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 10.65 points, or 0.56 percent, to 1,882.02 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Large-cap shares were bearish across the board, with market bellwether Samsung Electronics losing 2.13 percent and leading steelmaker POSCO down 1.59 percent.
U.S. stocks faltered on Wednesday, weighed down by a gloomy outlook on the U.S. economy despite better-than-expected corporate earnings. The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 0.04 percent and the Nasdaq composite index fell 0.47 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,069.55 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m., up 1.95 won from Wednesday's close.
