KEPCO unit, Indian firm to jointly build power plants
SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- The Korea East-West Power Co. (EWP), a subsidiary of the state-run Korea Electric Power Corp., said Thursday that it has reached a deal with an Indian counterpart to build power plants in the South Asian country.
Under the US$9 billion project with Sahara India Power Corp., the two partners will jointly construct and operate coal-fueled thermal plants that can generate 6,000 megawatts of power.
For the first step, they will build two 600 megawatt thermal power plants in Orissa, on the east coast of India, by 2016, with other projects to follow, said EWP. They have received approval from the Indian government to cooperate in the building and operation of the plants, it added.
The power company said that profits will be made from the sale of electricity over 25 years.
The EWP said the deal will help the company bring in income from electricity sales and strengthen its presence in India.
