Laos, Germany exchange lesson on gender role

VIENTIANE,AUG The female members of the Lao National Assembly discussed gender role with their German counterparts at a meeting held yesterday in Vientiane. The meeting was supported by the German Society for International Cooperation-GIZ.
“The Lao National Assembly has promoted the participation of women in lawmaking and the protection of rights and interests of people in line with the Party’s Congress’ resolution which indicates that it is necessary to have the presence of female members of National Assembly sharing 30 per cent of the seats in the Assembly,” said President of the Female Members of the National Assembly Boungnong Boupha.
The last general election to the National Assembly (seventh legislature) saw the election of 33 women as people representatives representing 25 per cent of the entire members of the National Assembly. However, Mrs. Boungnong said that the government expected to have at least 30 per cent of the seats in the next legislature of National Assembly hold by women.
Laos is the first country in the Asean region to have the National Assembly presided by woman, according to Mrs. Boungnong.
“This represents gender equality exists in the Lao PDR,” said Mrs. Bounyong.
German Parliamentarian Elisabeth Winkelmeier Becker told the meeting that gender role promotion has been observed for many decades in Germany and this has been represented through the fact that women are employed and hold positions in every sector in the society.
She also urged the participants to recognize the participation of women in decision making and the promotion of their participation in socio-economic development through media channels.
