Kia cars win int'l environmental certification
SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's second-largest automaker, said Thursday that three of its cars have earned eco-friendly certifications that could bolster sales down the road.
The carmaker, which sold more than 917,000 vehicles worldwide in the first seven months of this year, said its Optima mid-size sedan, Picanto small city car and all-new Rio subcompact won the life cycle assessment (LCA) environmental certification from TUV NORD Group, a German product consulting and technical service firm.
The LCA checks the entire production cycle of a car, from acquisition of raw materials to production, to determine if the manufacturer took steps to reduce global warming and conserve natural resources.
"TUV's latest findings showed the three vehicles released 3-13 percent less carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere compared to other cars," Kia said.
The certifications, which in the past have been given to such cars as Volkswagen's Passat, Golf and Polo, can benefit Kia sales in the European market, which places great importance on environmental protection, Kia said.
