Samsung to launch Chromebook in S. Korea

SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's second-largest mobile phone maker, said Thursday it will start selling a Chromebook laptop running on Google Inc.'s Web-based operating system in South Korea this week.
The Sens Chromebook Series 5 will be available in the Samsung mobile shop here for pre-orders between Friday and Aug. 28, and will also go on sale through an online shopping mall from Aug. 29, Samsung said in a statement.
Chromebooks are powered by Google's Chrome operating system, which lets users run programs, edit documents or save files by accessing the Web applications, similar to a smartphone.
The wireless-fidelity (Wi-Fi) version of the Chromebook will be sold for 639,000 won (US$596), the company said. It is available for $429 in the U.S.
The model, which will hit local shelves followed by the U.S. and Europe, is designed to improve mobility, weighing 1.5 kilograms and measuring 19.9 millimeters thick with an 8.5-hour battery life, it said.
With a booting speed of less than 10 seconds, the laptop carries a 12.1-inch antireflective display monitor designed to reduce eye fatigue, according to Samsung.
