Samsung tops European flat panel TV market in H1

SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of TVs, maintained its lead in Europe in the first half of this year, an international market researcher said Thursday.
According to Germany-based GfK Group, Samsung accounted for 30.7 percent of the European flat panel TV market, which includes liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma display panel (PDP) sets, in the January-June period.
Samsung's main rival LG Electronics Inc., the world's No. 2 TV maker, was the second-largest supplier in Europe with a market share of 15.7 percent, followed by Japan's Sony Corp. and Philips Electronics of the Netherlands.
In the LCD market alone, Samsung enjoyed a market share of 31.0 percent, with Sony and LG holding 15.3 percent and 14.7 percent each.
Samsung also maintained its lead in the premium light emitting diode (LED) and three-dimensional (3D) TV set markets with its shares reaching 34.9 percent and 46.3 percent, respectively, GfK said.
Samsung, meanwhile, claimed the latest findings confirmed its global leadership status in the global high value-added TV market.
Samsung said that if it can hold onto the present lead for the rest of 2011, it would mark the sixth straight year of making the best selling TVs in Europe.
