Kyrgyzstan and Russia are strategic partners - Kyrgyz PM

BISHKEK, August 18 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia and Kyrgyzstan are strategic
partners. As ITAR-TASS learnt at the press service of the Kyrgyz prime
minister, Prime Minister of the republic Almazbek Atambayev said this in
the city of Cholpon-Ata during a meeting with chairman of the Russian
Customs Service, co-chairman of the intergovernmental Kyrgyz-Russian
Cooperation Commission Andrei Belyaninov. "For us, further strengthening
of close mutual relations with the Russian Federation in the spirit of the
Declaration on Eternal Friendship, Alliance and Partnership is one of the
main priorities," the prime minister stressed.
According to the press service, during a meeting of Atambayev with
Belyaninov, the sides discussed "prospects for development and urgent
issues of Kyrgyz-Russia relations." "In particular, the sides touched upon
issues of development of trade and economic cooperation between the two
countries," a representative of the press service said. Besides, the
interlocutors discussed the issue of organizing a regular meeting of the
bilateral intergovernmental commission due to be held in Bishkek in
November.
According to the official information, over the last five years, trade
turnover between Kyrgyzstan and Russia increased several times and last
year reached the level of 1.4 billion dollars. "Russia is a strategic
investor and the main economic partner for us, the share of which amounts
to 25 percent of the whole volume of our foreign trade operations," Kyrgyz
Minister of Economic Regulation Uchkunbek Tashbayev said in Bishkek on
Thursday. In 2010, the volume of direct Russian investments in the Kyrgyz
economy amounted to 95.9 million dollars. "The main volume of direct
Russian investments was earmarked for the processing industry of
Kyrgyzstan," the ministry's spokesman explained ITAR-TASS. According to
Tashbayev's estimate, the implementation of projects in the field of
energy and the gas and oil sector is the most promising direction of
bilateral cooperation.
