Chinese film on 1937 Nanjing Massacre to be screened in Tokyo
TOKYO, Aug. 18 Kyodo -
A prizewinning Chinese film depicting the 1937 Nanjing Massacre from a Japanese perspective will be screened Sunday in Tokyo.
Directed by Lu Chuan of China, the 2009 film ''Nanjing! Nanjing!'' features as its central character a Japanese soldier played by Japanese actor Hideo Nakaizumi.
The film, known in English as ''City of Life and Death,'' won the best cinematography award at the 2009 San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain.
The film was screened in China that year and was a major hit. Though it attracted criticism of bias for depicting the incident from a Japanese point of view, the controversy helped raise its profile.
While it has not yet been screened in Japan, as it has not been picked up for distribution, a group of around 10 Japanese in their 30s and 40s have independently organized screening of the film.
Michiyo Arakawa, 37, a leading organizer, said, ''The film is not propaganda by the Chinese government. It depicts people, not countries or ethnic groups. The film contains scenes that are graphic and hard to watch but I hope it will help viewers learn about the history.''
The film will be screened twice at the 550-seat hall of the Nakano Zero academic facility complex, starting at 12:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Director Lu will attend a talk at the theater, the organizers said.
The Nanjing Massacre was a case of mass murder and rape that took place in the Chinese city in December 1937 during the Sino-Japanese war. In the incident, Imperial Japanese Army soldiers killed a large number of Chinese civilians and raped many Chinese women.
