Suu Kyi invited to government-sponsored forum on economic reform
BANGKOK, Aug. 18 Kyodo - The Myanmar government has formally invited democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi to take part in a government-sponsored forum on economic reform, a senior official of Suu Kyi's National League of Democracy said Thursday.
Myanmar President Thein Sein is scheduled to attend the forum, which will open in the administrative capital Naypyidaw on Friday.
The NLD official said the invitation was sent to Suu Kyi's home in Yangon on Wednesday.
Thein Sein, prime minister under the previous military government, took office on March 30 and has vowed to promote national reconciliation.
Suu Kyi has twice met with Labor and Relief Affairs Minister Aung Kyi, the military-dominated government's point man, since July 25.
Aung Kyi and Suu Kyi issued a joint statement after their second meeting in Yangon last Friday that they have agreed to refrain from confrontation and to cooperate toward the country's democratization.
