LG Electronics to showcase e-book reader in China

HONG KONG, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's electronics giant LG Electronics Inc. said Friday it will soon unveil an electronic book (e-book) reader in China, in a move to tap into the burgeoning market in the world's most populous country.
LG Electronics will showcase later this month its new e-book reader, with its screen resolution increased by 63 percent and weight reduced by 70 percent compared to the average e-book readers currently on the market, said officials at the company's China subsidiary.
They did not provide the exact date of the product launch in China.
The reader, which allows users to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, will also provide various content such as news offered by China's state-run Xinhua news agency and financial information, they said.
Global market researcher DisplaySearch estimated that the number of digital readers in China had grown to 3 million units in 2010, which accounted for 2 percent of the global market.
More than 80 percent of the publishing houses in China are seeking to digitize their books, using more than 60,000 types of e-book readers as platforms.
LG Display Co., an affiliate of LG Electronics, formed a joint e-book venture in China last year with a South Korean e-book maker, Iriver Ltd., to start production there.
The joint venture, L&I Electronic Technology Ltd., started operation in September in China's Guangdong Province with initial capital of US$5 million.
