Wages at public firms far outpace private firms

SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- The average wage of employees at South Korea's public corporations is much higher than that of private businesses, a government report said Friday.
According to the report by the Korea Institute of Public Finance, the average annual salary of workers at state firms came to 58.39 million won (US$53,935) last year, or 1.53 times the 38.13 million won earned by workers at private companies.
"The government will take into consideration the outcome of the study when forming future policies on the level of wages at state organizations," it said.
The wage gap significantly widened when compared with the average salary of employees at private firms with 30-299 workers, which was tallied at 35.03 million won. The average salary of private firms with more than 300 employees was at 51.63 million won.
State enterprises were also ahead of all industrial sectors except three -- retail, equipment-facility maintenance and business services -- in terms of their average wage.
