PM calls for watertight military readiness

SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik on Friday called for full military readiness for North Korea's armed provocations while visiting an air force command near Seoul, Kim's office said.
Kim visited the Air Force Operations Command in Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometers south of Seoul, to encourage soldiers and military workers taking part in a nationwide annual military drill.
"We should maintain thorough defense readiness to prevent North Korea from making any more military provocations similar to its attack of the Navy ship Cheonan and shelling of Yeonpyeong Island," he was quoted as telling the unit.
The two attacks, which occurred in March and November last year, killed 50 South Koreans and heightened tensions between the two Koreas.
The prime minister also emphasized the importance of the alliance between South Korea and the United States during the visit, the office said.
South Korea and U.S. forces on Tuesday launched their annual computer-aided military drill, called Ulchi Freedom Guardian, to improve their defense posture against the North. The exercise involving some 56,000 South Korean troops and 30,000 U.S. soldiers is scheduled to last till next Friday.
