Daegu takes safety measures for athletes, fans
DAEGU, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- Daegu announced Friday it will take a series of safety measures to ensure a convenient stay for athletes and fans during the upcoming World Championships in Athletics.
The city, located 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, said during the Aug. 27-Sept. 4 championships, it will operate first-aid stations and a massage therapy center outside Daegu Stadium, the main venue. The city will also set up a booth to raise awareness about AIDS.
Doctors, nurses and other assistants will be on hand to provide first aid and give free massages. Daegu officials said a situation room will be set up to oversee overall medical operations and to coordinate closely with the championships' organizers and other relevant bodies.
The championships are expected to bring in thousands of athletes, fans and journalists from at least 207 countries. It's the signature event for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
In addition to first aid, Daegu will take measures to prevent disease by spraying disinfectant in areas surrounding competition facilities and the athletes' village. The city has designated 22 local hospitals, with a total of 267 beds, as isolation institutions if highly contagious diseases break out.
To ensure food safety, the Daegu wing of the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) will employ 132 food inspectors at the athletes' village, competition and practice facilities and major food and beverage distributors until Sept. 7.
The city also said it will list 410 quality, accessible motels throughout the city for foreign visitors.
"We want to have perfect preparations so that people who come to the world championships have convenient access to medical service, accommodations and transportation," said Lee Young-sun, head of Daegu City Hall's health, welfare and women bureau. "We want to host the greatest championships ever."
