Police seek arrest of ex-president's son-in-law

SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- Police said Friday they have sought an arrest warrant for the son-in-law of late former president Park Chung-hee on charges of defaming and diffusing false rumors about the president's only son.
Shin Dong-uk, 43, the husband of Park's second daughter Geun-ryoung, is suspected of raising false accusations that he was abducted in 2007 by an aide and relative of Park Ji-man, the late president's son. Under orders from the junior Park, Shin alleged that his kidnappers took him to China and threatened to kill him, the Gangnam Police Station said.
Defamation charges against Shin also included raising unfounded claims that the aides of Park Ji-man spread rumors that Shin took illegal drugs in China. Shin later brought the two aides to court on the accusations but the court dismissed the case.
"On Tuesday, police applied for an arrest warrant for Shin after consultation with prosecutors," a police official said. Police needed the warrant because "Shin is feared to destroy evidence or flee as he is denying the charges in spite of a long criminal record," the official noted.
The latest police action came after they unsuccessfully sought a court-issued warrant to arrest Shin for his Internet postings in January allegedly traducing his brother-in-law and Park Geun-hye, the president's eldest daughter and currently a strong presidential aspirant of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP).
In the postings, Shin claimed the GNP lawmaker overlooked Park Ji-man's attempt to take away his shares in the Yookyoung Foundation, a children's education and welfare fund founded in 1969 by Yook Young-su, the president's assassinated wife and the three siblings' mother.
The foundation manages massive amounts of assets and has been a source of conflict among the children of the authoritarian president who ruled the country between 1963 and 1979.
