(ATTN: UPDATES throughout with announcement; CHANGES headline)
SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak on Friday named a former state prosecutor as his senior civil affairs secretary, his office said.
Cheong Chin-young, 52, succeeded Kwon Jae-jin who became the justice minister last week.
"While in the prosecution, Cheong built ample experiences in various areas and has excellent managerial capabilities that put him in charge of a district prosecutor's office four times in a row," presidential spokesman Park Jeong-ha told reporters.
"We expect the designate Cheong will use his well-rounded personalities and superb capabilities to straighten discipline in the officialdom and establish a cooperation system with related agencies like the Justice Ministry, the prosecution and the Board of Audit and Inspection," he said.
Cheong was one of the two candidates whom Lee had considered for the post, along with Kim Hoe-sun, a former senior prosecutor who also served as a deputy director of the National Intelligence Service in 2008-2009, other presidential officials said.
Cheong became a prosecutor after passing the bar exam in 1981. He has since served in various posts, including chief of the Jeju District Prosecutor's Office and the Incheon District Prosecutor's Office.
