Iran to Continue Sending Humanitarian Aids to Somalia

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's Red Crescent Society announced that 200 tons of humanitarian aids will be dispatched to drought-hit Somalia in coming days.
Deputy Head of Iran's Red Crescent Society for Operation Heidar Heidari said that the Society has set aside 200 tons of such aids for the people and the humanitarian cargos will be shipped to the country in the coming days both through air and sea.
He added that Iran's first aid consignment includes 48 tons of medicine, food packages and other emergency items, blankets, tents and different kinds of canned food, which were distributed among the Somali people.
Meantime, the society is to set up 200 emergency tents in Mogadishu hospitals to provide shelter for the Somali people.
The tents will be set up in open areas and yards of the hospitals based on coordination made with Somali officials.
Meantime, the third planeload of Iran's humanitarian aid shipment for Somalis landed in Aden-Adde International Airport in the capital Mogadishu early on Thursday.
The 60-ton consignment of the Islamic Republic's humanitarian aid comprises foodstuff and medicine.
The drought and famine have affected more than 11.8 million people across Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Somalia has been the hardest-hit country in what is being described as the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in 60 years.
According to the United Nations, it is estimated that a quarter of Somalia's population of 9.9 million are now either internally displaced or living outside the country as refugees.
