Poor, Jobless Youths Play Central Role in Recent Protests in Britain

TEHRAN (FNA)- Findings of a new research in Britain showed that most of those who took part in the recent protests in Britain were young and jobless men coming from some of the poorest districts of the country.
Data on the background of those who have appeared before judges since the August 6-10 unrests show that 91% of the defendants are men and the majority under 25 years of age.

Most of those arrested live in poor neighborhoods, with a massive 41% living in the 10% most deprived parts of Britain.

And 66% of the neighborhoods where the accused live got poorer from 2007-2010. Just 8.6% of the suspects have jobs or are students.

The findings, obtained by The Guardian on the basis of court papers, come as the media focuses on those suspects who are either in jobs or in full-time education.

Meantime, Legal and political figures in Britain voiced their deep concern over the harsh sentences of British protesters.

UK Rights groups also condemned the courts for passing harsh sentences for those arrested in aftermath of the country's massive unrests.

Some 3,000 have been arrested, and over one-thousand three-hundred people have appeared in court.
