Lavrov to carry on his LatAm tour, to visit Peru Tuesday
LIMA, August 23 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs
Sergei Lavrov is to carry on his Latin American tour. He is due to leave
El Salvador for Peru on Tuesday.
When in Lima, the Russian Minister is to meet with Ollanta Humala
Tasso, President of Peru, Daniel Abugattas, President of the Peruvian
Congress, and hold talks with Peruvian Foreign Minister Rafael Roncogliolo.
According to Alexander Lukashevich, spokesman of Russia's Foreign
Ministry, main attention during the talks will be devoted to matters
concerning an expansion of trade-and-economic contacts between the two
countries. "It is of importance to bring the scope of reciprocal trade up
to a level that woudl correspond to the existing potential," the Russian
diplomat said.
Bilateral trade turnover as of now is about $329 million a year.
Moscow expects that the agreement between the Russian Federation and Peru
on the abolition of visa arrangements will make it possible to intensify
business contacts and augment respective indicators.The Agreement entered
into force in June this year.
Lukashevich alos said, "Considering Russia's and Peur's participation
in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, one of items on the
agenda (of the upcoming talks) will be prospects for a more active
interaction within the framework of the that forum".
On the whole, talks in Lima, the Russian Ministry spokesman
emphasized, "are aimed at maintaining the positive dynamism of the
development of relations between the two countries".
Observers point out that in recent years the dialogue between Russia
and Peru considerably intensified. The two countries demonstrate
proximity of approaches to most of international problems.
The legal-treaty basis includes a document on partnership relations,
agreements on military-technical cooperation, on peaceful uses of nuclear
energy, on cooperation in the fields of culture, education and science, as
well as on the prevention and elimination of the aftermath of emergencies.
Moscow and Lima successfully interact in the fuel-and-energy sector.
Peru is the world's major producer of silver and ranks second in the
production of copper and molybdenum, third in the production of tin and
bismuth, and fifth in gold mining. Coffee, wool, cotton, and textiles are
Peruvian export commodities. The country carries out large-scale
deliveries of lead and zinc concentrates, fish and marine products to
Russia. Mineral fertilizers account for about 90 percent of Russian
exports there.
