US vice-president holds talks with Mongolia leaders in Ulan-Bator

ULAN-BATOR, August 23 (Itar-Tass) -- The United States is interested
in cooperation with Mongolia in the sphere of energy, US Vice-President
Joseph Biden, as the local press reports on Tuesday, said at talks with
Prime Minister Sukhabaataryn Batbold and President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj
of Mongolia in Ulan-Bator on Monday.
According to the US vice-president, the two countries have favourable
prospects for establishing interaction in the use of ecologically healthy
renewable sources of energy. Mongolia, as he stressed, has a considerable
potential in this sphere, and the United States - - high technologies,
which is of interest for the United States.
During the talks, the sides also touched upon prospects for
cooperation in the field of using the atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
In this respect, Mongolia, as the prime minister said, is interested in
training qualified cadres for the atomic sector in the United States.
As newspapers note, the issue of burying American nuclear wastes on
the territory of Mongolia was not touched upon during Biden's talks with
the Mongolian top leadership. On the eve of the US vice-president's
arrival in Mongolia, a number of mass media bodies reported that the topic
of utilization of nuclear wastes will be one of the main issues of
discussion at Biden's meetings with the Mongolian leadership.
Actions of protest with the participation of ecologists and active
members of non-governmental human rights protection organizations of the
country were held in the main square of the Mongolian capital. They
demanded that the government should not allow the United States to turn
Mongolia into an atomic dump.
