Iran's Top Diplomat Leaves for Somalia

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi left Tehran for Mogadishu at the head of a delegation to accelerate delivery of Iran's humanitarian aids to the hunger-hit Somali people and review the crisis situation in the country.
Heading an Iranian delegation including experts from Iran's Red Crescent Society, Salehi is due to hold talks with Somali officials on the crisis and visit the refugee camps.
Meantime, Iran's Red Crescent Society plans to send more humanitarian aid cargos to the Somali people as the North African country is fighting drought and famine.
Iran has repeatedly announced its support for the people of Somalia, stressing that it would spare no effort to help the Somalis survive the tragic situation.
The drought and famine have affected more than 11.8 million people across Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Somalia has been the hardest-hit country in what is being described as the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in 60 years.
According to the United Nations, it is estimated that a quarter of Somalia's population of 9.9 million are now either internally displaced or living outside the country as refugees.
The UN has declared famine in five areas in Southern Somalia, warning that, without urgent intervention, the food crisis could engulf the entire southern areas.
