Flood causes 240 bln kip loss for agriculture

Vientiane,aug.(KPL)- Eleven provinces across the country have been reportedly suffering a combined damage worth over 240 billion kip in agriculture due to natural disasters, according to Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr. Vilayvanh Phomkhe.
Between June and August, typhoons Haima and Nock-ten have damaged basic agricultural infrastructure sector of Phongsaly, Oudomsay, Luang Prabang, Sayaboury, Xiengkhouang, Vientiane (province), Borlikhamsay, Khammouan, Savannakhet, Champassak and Vientiane, according to Mr. Vilayvanh.
“Over 63,000 ha of farmland and 400 irrigation systems have been damaged by the flooding,” said Mr. Vilayvanh.
Vientiane province is the most hard-hit province. The damage cost of the disaster for agriculture sector in the province is estimated at 100 billion kip, according to Mr. Vilayvanh.
In addition, the disasters have left several provinces in need of urgent financial assistance.
