Video to be used to measure jump events for first time outdoors

DAEGU, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) -- A high-tech electronic system will replace tape measures to measure distances in jumping events at the upcoming World Championships in Athletics, organizers said Wednesday.
The Video Distance Measurement System will be making its outdoor debut at the world championships in Daegu, 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul. It was first introduced at last year's World Indoor Championships in Athletics in Doha, Qatar.
According to organizers, the system can measure distances in the long jump and triple jump without having to place a prism at the landing point. The distance can be calculated by clicking on the landing point on a computer screen.
Four cameras will be installed high up in the stands at Daegu Stadium. The system will ensure accuracy and save time for officials, organizers said.
The photo finish system will be bolstered by an extra camera at the finish line and two more inside the photo finish room for officials. Previously, only two cameras had been set up on either end of the finish line.
Seiko, the operator of the system, said it can capture 2,000 frames per second to ensure accurate calls in sprint events.
Among other high-tech products to be used, the transponder system will be installed around the track to provide information such as lap speed and number of laps left. The Optical Distance Measurement System will be used in the discus throw, hammer throw and javelin throw.
