Vic man dies after dispute with neighbours
SYDNEY (AAP) - A neighbourhood dispute appears to have sparked a fatal assault in Melbourne's outer east.
A man suffered severe head injuries and died after being struck with a weapon in the driveway of a block of units in Boronia on Tuesday night.
Police say a teenager stepped in to help his father, who had been involved in an altercation with the 42-year-old man.
"A 14-year-old boy has stepped in to assist his father and as a result of that a (42-year-old) man has died," Knox Detective Sergeant Graham Ross told reporters.
The 59-year-old man and his 14-year-old son, who lived in a neighbouring unit, were interviewed and released without charge on Wednesday morning.
"At this stage they have been released pending further inquiries and the investigation is still ongoing," Det Sgt Ross said.
Police had been called to previous incidents involving the neighbours in the confrontation.
"The parties do know each other and there has been some incidents reported to police in the past," Det Sgt Ross said.
Paramedics tried to save the 42-year-old man, but he died at the scene after the incident, which occurred about 9.10pm (AEST) on Tuesday.
The dead man had reportedly been visiting his girlfriend at the Rankin Road unit.
