STX: Talks under way with UAE state firm to take over chipmaker Hynix
SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's STX Group is now in the last stages of negotiations with a state firm of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for their joint takeover of a stake in Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the world's second-largest computer memory chipmaker, industry sources said Wednesday.
STX, South Korea's shipbuilding conglomerate, submitted a preliminary bid last month to purchase a 15 percent stake in Hynix.
According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the South Korean conglomerate is nearing a deal with Aabar Investments PJS, a global investment company owned by the UAE's Abu Dhabi government.
Under the envisioned deal, STX will shoulder 51 percent of costs for the purchase to take managerial rights over Hynix, they said.
South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom also submitted a preliminary bid to take over the company from credit banks that acquired the offered stake in debt-to-share swaps in 2001 and 2002.
