7th ASEAN Civil Conference success learned

VIENTIANE,AUG.(KPL)- Over 50 officials from ASEAN department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Lao Women Union and international organisations met in Vientiane on 24 August to discuss the success of the ASEAN Civil Conference and the 7th ASEAN People’s Forum held on 3-7 May in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The meeting was attended by Ms. Khamphao Ernthavanh, Head of Institute of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ms Phavanh Nouanthasin, Deputy Head of ASEAN Department of the Ministry.
At the meeting, the participants were informed of the ASEAN Civil Conference and the 7th ASEAN People’s Forum and participants as well as ASEAN history and its structure, ASEAN Charter, ASEAN 3 Pillars, ASEAN International Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), ASEAN Commission on Women and Children and preparation for the ASia-Europe People’s Forum meeting in 2012, which will be hosted by Laos.
“The ASEAN civil conference 7th was held in Jakarta, Indonesia with the participation of over 1,300 representatives from 10 ASEAN member states.
At the conference, important regional issues were raised and discussed with the agenda of the next 18th ASEAN Summit discussed,” said Mr. Amphone Souvannalath Director of the Oxfam Novib.
Mr. Amphone said the conference saw further commitment to contributing to the building of Asean security pillar, requesting ASEAN and government to support the civil society seriously, and building capacity for civil so that they will be able to face and adapt themselves with cooperation changing and raising domestic solidarity and in the region.
During the ASEAN summit 11th in Shah Alam, Malaysia in 2005, President of the conference host country introduced ASEAN Civil Society Conference in statue as one of the stage for society to organize and make a solidarity among public people in ASEAN group, the 2nd Annual ASEAN Civil Society Conference was held in Cebu, Philippines in 2006, the 3rd conference held in Singapore and the 4th conference held in Bangkok (Thailand), 5th conference held in Sa Um (Thailand) in the same year and 6th conference held in Hanoi (Vietnam) under the title ASEAN People’s Forum (APF).
