Former Motorola Korea employee indicted over stealing management secrets

SEOUL, Aug. 26 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors said Friday they have indicted a former employee of the South Korean unit of Motorola on charges of stealing the handset maker's management secrets after moving to a rival electronics firm.
The 39-year-old employee of Motorola Korea, surnamed Cheong, was indicted without physical detention on suspicions that he stole about 249 computer files from January to May last year, which contain the U.S.-based firm's classified sales information, according to the Seoul District Prosecutors' Office.
Even after moving to a rival electronics firm in January 2010, Cheong allegedly broke into Motorola's local office repeatedly using his former Motorola pass, which remained active due to belated paperwork involving his resignation. During the illegitimate office visits, he connected to in-house electronic archives to steal the secret files, prosecutors said.
The stolen data included Motorola's investment volumes in different markets and regions, marketing strategies on customers and partners, and the rate of returns on investments, the prosecution office said.
Cheong told investigators that he did not pass the stolen data to his new employer, which the prosecution did not identify, claiming that the files were retrieved for his own purpose, according to the prosecution.
Prosecutors also said they found no evidence that the information was given to the rival company. Cheong quit his new firm after the investigation began, they said.
