RF, DPRK to discuss major infrastructure projects
PYONGYANG, August 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Major infrastructure projects
involving Russia, the DPRK and the Republic of Korea will be discussed on
Friday at a meeting of the Russian-Korean intergovernmental commission on
trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, Russia's Minister
of Regional Development Viktor Basargin told Itar-Tass in an exclusive
interview. He arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday. He co-chairs the
commission together with the DPRK's Minister of Foreign Trade.
The meeting will follow up talks between Russia's President Dmitry
Medvedev and the DPRK's leader Kim Jong-il in Ulan-Ude.
Basargin said that at the meeting in the capital of Buryatia reached
an agreement to establish a joint commission for transit of gas via North
Korea to South Korea. Engineering work for this project will start soon,
he said.
Russia is represented by delegates from ministries of economic
development, finance, energy, industry and trade, agriculture, and foreign
affairs. VEB, Gazprom, INTER RAO UES, Russia's Railways, companies Altai
Mill and Northern Mines, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of
Chuvashia sent their representatives to Pyongyang, too. The agenda of the
intergovernmental commission will be quite extensive. Much attention will
be paid to improving of bilateral economic and trade ties.
According to the Russian side, the trade turnover between the two
countries reached in January - June of the current year 25.3 million
dollars, including exports to North Korea - 19.1 million dollars and
imports from the DPRK - 6.2 million dollars. A source in the Russian
delegation says that the agenda included also issues cooperation in
energy, transport, forestry, and involvement of North Korean labour. For
example, there are plans to use workers from the DPRK in agriculture and
light industry. The sides will discuss settlement of the North Korean debt
of eleven billion dollars. According to the source, the meeting of the
Russian-Korean intergovernmental commission "may open a new chapter in
economic and trade relations between the two countries"
