U.S. agency accuses S. Korean firms of unfair trade
By Lee Chi-dong
WASHINGTON, Aug. 26 (Yonhap) -- A U.S. government agency said Friday that a local industry has been hurt by South Korea's allegedly unfair export of large power transformers.
In July, a group of U.S. producers of liquid dielectric large power transformers (LPTs) filed an antidumping duty petition with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission (ITC), charging that unfairly traded imports of LPTs are causing material injury to the domestic industry.
After a vote on the issue, the ITC said it "determined that there is a reasonable indication that a U.S. industry is materially injured by reason of imports of large power transformers from Korea that are allegedly sold in the United States at less than fair value."
The ITC is an independent and quasi-judicial federal agency with broad investigative responsibilities in matters of trade.
As a result of the move, the Department of Commerce will continue to conduct its antidumping investigation of imports of those products from South Korea, the ITC said in a press release.
The department's preliminary determination on the matter is due on or around Dec. 21, it added.
