Athletes voluntarily submit blood samples: IAAF

By Yoo Jee-ho
DAEGU, Aug. 27 (Yonhap) -- More than three-quarters of all athletes competing at the World Championships in Athletics here have voluntarily submitted their blood samples, the international athletics governing body said Saturday, in a boost to the organization's large-scale anti-doping campaign.
In a statement, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said more than 1,400 of 1,945 athletes from 202 nations, or 75 percent of the total entry list at the biennial competition, have come to the drug testing center inside the athletes' village to give blood.
"It is not an exaggeration to say that the athletes have been 'eager' to provide their blood, with many happy Daegu entrants confirming that they wanted to send a clear message to their peers that they had nothing to hide," the IAAF said.
On Aug. 11, the IAAF declared that it would collect blood samples from all athletes in Daegu, calling it "an unprecedented anti-doping program." The IAAF said it will be the first time that nearly 2,000 athletes at a major sports competition receive blood tests under the same optimal conditions.
The agency wants to develop a biological passport, or a database of references covering various biomarkers.
The IAAF said the local organizing committee and the Korean Anti-Doping Agency (KADA) will help to this end, and collecting blood samples is in addition to the random testing of urine and blood samples at all world championships.
